Key areas assessed for the SEAG Transfer Test in Northern Ireland

📖 English Assessment

The English paper assesses reading comprehension and language skills based on the Key Stage 2 Northern Ireland Curriculum.

  • Comprehension: Literal and inferential understanding of prose, poetry, fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Spelling & Punctuation: Proofreading errors, use of capital letters, apostrophes, brackets, speech marks and UK spellings
  • Grammar: Identifying nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, tenses and plurals
  • Vocabulary: Word meanings, synonyms and homonyms
  • Format: Mostly multiple choice and some short written responses

🧮 Mathematics Assessment

The Maths paper focuses on problem-solving and reasoning, aligned with the Northern Ireland Key Stage 2 curriculum.

  • Number: Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, multiplication, division, patterns & sequences
  • Measurement: Length, weight, area, volume, time, temperature, metric conversions, scaling
  • Shape & Space: 2D and 3D shape properties, angles, turns, coordinates, symmetry
  • Money: Calculations, change, estimation
  • Probability & Data: Likelihood terms, basic probability, graphs, averages, tally charts
  • Format: Mostly multiple choice and short answer; no drawing or Imperial units required
